Anonymous asked: i love it when my cox tells us that the race is ours if we want it or that we can take first place if we want it. also going through the boat and naming all your rowers individually helps each rower stay focused

swings-and-bubbles asked: To what you just posted- I cox men's collegiate and weigh under 110 (men's require coxswains weigh 120). There's no reason why you couldn't cox if you weigh under, you'd just be sandbagged when there are weigh-ins.

Anonymous asked: Hi I've rowed for two years now. I coxed my first season and then while erging I discovered I'm good at rowing, from then on I rowed. But we are short on coxswains, and I've been filling in occassionally for the varsity. I'm not that great of a coxswain and every time I nearly crash the boat and I'm sick of having a heart attack every practice. Is their a polite way to ask...

Anonymous asked: To the person wondering about if they should say something about the rower in 2 categories- Is this person rowing as a novice and a varsity? Because if that is the case, it is sometimes allowed. Like on my team, we don't have enough varsity girls to race 2 eights, so for races we will take several novice girls to race with us in our varsity event, and then they will also race in their novice...

Anonymous asked: About the question I just asked- It's not my team that's racing one person twice, it's another team that we're racing, so I don't have any contact with their team. This is just what I know from the submissions they made on regatta central. Would they have to withdraw one of the entries? I don't think it's fair that they do this.

Anonymous asked: I have a big race coming up in a few weeks, and I was looking at some of the boats when I noticed that a rower in one of the boats in my race is also racing in another category. I checked the rules, and it's not allowed. I don't want to sound like a tattle, but I don't think it's very fair, especially when my team is struggling to make boats with the numbers we have. Is this...

Too tall for coxing?
kaleidoscopian
To whoever asked if they were too tall to be a coxswain at 5’7, if you feel you would cox better than you would row, go for it. There’s no height limit, but weight is a bit more important (Minimum for coxing women is 50kg - 110lbs - , for men it’s 55kg - 121lbs -). Tall coxes aren’t that uncommon (look at Cambridge crew this year, their cox was 5’7),...

Anonymous asked: I'm a first year novice and right now I'm rowing, but I feel like I could be a good coxswain. I'm 5'2" and weigh about 112 lbs. and the rest of my team thinks that I'm really motivational. As a rower, I'm on the C boat. Do you have any advice on whether I should continue rowing or should try out coxing?

To the anonymous coxswain:
My cox on my college team is 5’5” and 120. She’s bigger than some of our rowers. But she’s also very good at what she does and our coaches have never considered making her row.
Don’t worry about your height. Just be the best cox you can be and everything else will fall into place!

Anonymous asked: I'm a cox and I have a hard time finding things to say in the boat. Any advice?

Anonymous asked: I'm 5'6" and 120 and I cox just fine. It's not the size of the cox but the motivational abilities.

opekasit asked: I would suggest the height of a cox is no big deal really. We see a lot of shorter people there because they are also, usually, lightweight. Frankly tall is good 'cause they can see better -- as long as they don't lean to one side or the other.

Anonymous asked: How tall is too tall for a cox? I'm 5'3" and 110lbs and I'm the tallest out of my team's 6 coxswains. There are rowers shorter and lighter than me! I feel like I wouldn't be effective in a boat since I haven't trained to be a rower, and I've solely coxed since I joined last year. But I feel like I have to row because of my size. I love my coxswain seat...

Anonymous asked: i tried out for my high school's rowing team as a novice last summer. I was on the team for all of fall and then they cut me for winter training, which i did not understand.. So all of winter, i was not able to erg, because my gym didn't have one and i don't have one, but i ran and did stuff like that. So when spring finally came, i was not prepared, so i didn't make the team....

thedeaddog asked: About sores on the hand, epsom salt is going to hurt like a 5x5' at 2k pace. But it dries out the skin and allows healing to happen while you can still row. I suggest using a little in warm water and completely soaking the whole hand. It also prevents other callouses from ripping.

weighnuff-deactivated20120429 asked: To the posts about cox bags: it is important to have anything that you could need while on the water. I always have: water, tape, bandaids, a piece of paper with emergency contact info, a bandana, sunglasses, chapstick. I pack a little heavy so I also bring: extra sweater, socks, phone, and hairties.

To the rower asking about the rip, put superglue on it. It helps a lot. Everyone on my team swears by it.

Anonymous asked: Today I rowed and what was in the process of callousing ripped open and left a huge, RAW open sore/wound and it stings like a freakin mofo. I'm scared to row tomorrow and my eyes involuntarily water/tear up whenever I bend my hand or anything. What am I supposed to do? Someone recommended that I ONLY put tape on it, or I put a Blister Band-Aid on it (which is pretty much like a thick...

someonesheroine asked: in response to coxswain's bags, I usea jansport mesh backpack. it's one of the best purchases I've ever made, ahaha. The bag is full of holes, so it leaks water on me, but it never has to...

Anonymous asked: Re: 5'3" rower. Just want to say it is perfectly possible to be their height/weight and be a varsity rower. I am a varsity rower at 5' and 127lbs and have never competed lightweight. Us shorty rowers need more representation.

Anonymous asked: I am 5'3 and 117 pounds... I am currently a second your varsity rower, but I am so short and not close enought to weight to make our LW boat. I was thinking about becoming a coxswain for women. It would not be hard for me to lose 5 pounds... Do you think I should just stick with rowing, or should I lose some weight and become a coxswain starting next year?
